Cyber Round Up: Cyberspace Becoming a Strategic Liability — WH Cybersecurity Coordinator, SEC Steps Up Cybersecurity Enforcement, Navy Establishes Cybersecurity Division

  • Cyberspace Becoming a Strategic Liability — WH Cybersecurity Coordinator (Fiercegovernmentit.com):  According to an article by FierceGovernmentIT, White House Cybersecurity Coordinator Michael Daniel spoke at the National Cybersecurity Alliance and Fido Alliance on October 6.  In his keynote address, Mr. Daniel explained that cyber vandalism, the act of using cyber intrusions to embarrass targets, are “the least of our worries right now,” according to the article.  Mr. Daniel further stated that bad actors are showing less restraint and have become more willing to be disruptive, continued the article.  The article quoted Mr. Daniel as saying “We actually risk the internet and cyberspace becoming a strategic liability.  Our adversaries will be able to hold us at risk in cyberspace in a way that they cannot in any other area that we can think of.  And that’s not an outcome that we want.”  The full article can be found here.
  • SEC Steps Up Cybersecurity Enforcement (National Law Review):  The SEC has been increasing activities to address cybersecurity since September, according to the National Law Review.  The article reports that in a week, the SEC issued a new alert in connection with its cybersecurity examination of Wall Street firms, entered a Cease and Desist Order against a firm for failing to adopt written policies and procedures for the protection of customer information, and also issued an Investor Alert highlighting the actions that individuals should take if their information is compromised.  The full article can be found here.
  • U.S. Navy Establishes Cybersecurity Division (ExecutiveGov.com):  The U.S. Navy created a new organization aimed to incorporate cybersecurity strategies into its acquisition process, employee practices, and organizational culture, ExecutiveGov reports.  According to the article, the division will be called the Navy Cybersecurity office, and will have approximately forty employees.  The division will also be tasked to continue the work of the Task Force Cyber Awakening, including bolstering the Navy’s defense against information technology security threats, according to the article.  The full article can be found here.
