Cyber Round Up: Chinese Hackers Still Attacking U.S. Companies, CIA Revamps Cybersecurity Approach, Federal Cybersecurity Spending Up Five-Fold

  • Chinese Hackers Still Attacking U.S. Companies (Crowdstrike):  According to a Crowdstrike blog post, cyber hackers affiliated with the Chinese government have continued to attempt to gain unauthorized access into the systems of the U.S. companies.  Crowdstrike, a cybersecurity company that provides services to private companies, reported that in the past three weeks since the cyber agreement between the U.S. and China was made, it has “detected and prevented a number of intrusions” into the systems of customers, according to the blog post.  Further, the blog post specified that seven of the companies are in the technology and pharmaceutical sectors.  The full blog post can be found here.
  • CIA Revamps Cybersecurity Approach (Business Insider):  The CIA launched a new directorate, the first in fifty years, designed to expand its cyber-espionage capacity and fight against hackers, Business Insider reportedAccording to the article, CIA Director ohm Brennan described it as a “key milestone” in the agency’s broader modernization and reorganization efforts.  The new directorate is called the Directorate of Digital Innovation, and according to the article, it aims to develop the agency’s use of “technology for cybersecurity and to enhance the capabilities of spies on the ground.”  The full article can be found here.
  • Federal Cybersecurity Spending Up Five-Fold (ExecutiveGov):  U.S. federal spending on cybersecurity acquisition has risen nearly five-fold over the past three years, ExecutiveGov reportedAccording to the article, spending in the fiscal year (“FY”) 2014 totaled to about $31 billion, and increase from $6 billion in FY 2011.  More specifically, the article reports that spending for “offensive cyber platforms” increased 150% to $15 billion in FY 2014, up from $6 billion in the FY 2013.  Further, expenditures on cyber awareness and training in the federal government totaled $109 million in 2014, an increase of 309% over the last three years, the article reported.  Find the full article here.
