President Rousseff’s Response to NSA Might Have Domestic Implications

In further response to the NSA revelations, including evidence that the U.S. agency was spying on Brazil, President Dilma Rousseff has been working with domestic lawmakers to implement legislation that would force Internet companies to store data about their users inside Brazil, according to Reuters, with the stated goal of minimizing spying by other nations.

However, executives and analysts believe this plan will likely backfire.  Rather than heightening security, this “could . . . send costs soaring and hurt future investments in a key emerging market for companies like Google, Facebook, and Twitter[.]”

The bill has not yet been published and, at this point, the article reports, the number and specific companies that would be impacted by such a law is uncertain.
