Via Bloomberg’s Brian Wingfield, Representatives Sander Levin of Michigan and Charles Rangel of New York argued that President Obama should seek to curb China’s cyberexploitation. Reps Rangel & Levin communicated this stance in a letter to acting U.S. Trade Representative (USTR) Demetrios Marantis. The Bloomberg article noted that the USTR has promised to “toughen trade-secret protection[s].” Sens. Baucus & Hatch wrote a similar letter to Marantis, and apparently want to “create a position at USTR to oversee intellectual-property during trade negotiations.”

Beyond the rhetoric, though, there’s a brewing and complex debate in Washington over what exactly to do about the attacks. As they really just begin to confront the confounding China cybersecurity problem, both the White House and Congress must walk a precarious line — stopping the hackers, preventing diplomatic fallout and preserving U.S. trade.
