On September 26th, 2011, CBS News reported on how the Pentagon is extending a pilot program to protect US defense contractors against cyberattack. The program, which could serve as a model for other government agencies and critical infrastructure, seeks to harden the networks of defense contractors against attack. To do so, the program has embraced intelligence sharing between government agencies and the private sector.
So far, the trial program involves at least 20 defense companies and will be considered for expansion to more companies and more subcontractors. Deputy Secretary of Defense William Lynn said that the program is promising, and should be expanded to protect other vital sectors. Department of Homeland Security officials believe that expansion of the program should be accompanied with legislation making DHS responsible for helping private companies protect themselves against cyberattack.
