Cyberattack on Japan’s missle, nuclear plants: Financial Times

On September 19th, 2011, Lindsay Whipp reported for the Financial Times on how computers and servers at Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (Japan's largest defense contractor) were hacked in a cyberattack.  The attack was Japan's first known cyberattack on the country's defense industry and targeted Mitsubishi Heavy Industries' submarine, missle, and nuclear plants.  The company went on to say that it has not uncovered leakage of vital data relating to technology and production, but access has been gained to certain internet protocol addresses.

The article notes that the attack is similar to a recent cyberattack on McAfee, the US security software company.  That attack, which penetrated 72 government agencies and other organizations, copied data from military secrets to industrial designs.

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries did not speculate on who might be behind the cyberattack.
